Welcome to my blog;
Many of you may not be thinking about golf during the cold days here in Hampton Roads, however one nice day can send you into golf fever! Unfortunately, many get discouraged that their first play of the season does not meet the quality of their last outing. Before you get discouraged, remember that there are lots of things you can do to get yourself ready for spring!
It’s time to check your equipment. Do you need new grips on your clubs? Do you need comfortable shoes? Now is an ideal time to test out new clubs that you were looking at in the fall and take advantage of indoor simulators.
First and foremost now is the time to start working on that short game. It may be as simple as putting in the living room to work on distance control or practicing those dreaded three footers. You can get a head start on your buddies. The weather still may be too rough to get out and play a quick nine, so why not hit the chipping practice green. The days are longer now so after work get to your local course and start trying to re-capture that touch you had last fall. Start out close to the putting surface and chip with every iron in your bag. Start to re-learn how the length of the back-swing dictates how far the ball travels. Try this 15-30 minutes 2 to 3 times a week, for the next month. You will be amazed at how many shots you will save in the first few rounds of the new year.
If the desire strikes to get to the range and hit some shots go for it. Just be careful, most likely its been a while since you swung a club. Start out with some short irons, preferably wedges only for the first couple times out. Work on proper set up and alignment. Take your time and think about these two keys. Without them you are working against yourself. Start out hitting shots to a target 25 yards out, then move to 50-75 and 100 yards. These are the scoring distances where most golfers throw away shots. So… while its still cold and your body may still be a little tight, take it easy, fight the urge to pull out the driver and focus on hitting the target from short distances. Once you have accomplished that goal successfully go ahead and grab the 9 iron and work your way down to the long irons, fairway woods and lastly the driver. When spring arrives you will be ready to make 2010 the best golfing year of your life.
